Tooth loss can be devastating. Beyond the impact on the smile, it can affect oral health and self-esteem. The good news is adult tooth loss does not have to be permanent. While dentures have been around for over 100 years, they aren’t a perfect solution. Traditional dentures sit on top of the gums, which can make a secure fit challenging. Dentures that are uncomfortable, move around, or fall out are some of the biggest complaints from patients.
Dr. O’Malley recommends implant-supported dentures to address tooth loss. Dental implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth because they are inserted into the jawbone.
During a thorough evaluation, Dr. O’Malley will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. Patients must be in good oral health and have sufficient bone structure for successful placement. Patients with bone loss may still be eligible for implants after receiving a bone graft.
The first phase of dental implants involves placing the post into the jawbone. These posts will serve as the anchor for a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth are missing. After the implant is in place, the mouth is left to heal. Over the course of several months to bone will fuse with the implant.
Once the bone has healed around the implant, patients return to have the abutment attached. This piece serves as an extender and connects the implant and the restoration.
Once the gum tissue has healed after placement of the abutment, the final restoration can be placed. For patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth, a full of denture made to look beautiful and natural can be snapped into place.
